A Short History of the Birkdale Fruitgrowers Society and the

Beach Haven Birkdale Residents and Ratepayers Association

1912 23rd August Birkdale Fruitgrowers Society was formed.

1919 added “Ratepayers” to its name

1929 Beach Haven & Birkdale Ratepayers & Residents Association was formed. It held its meetings in the Dean’s Hall (since demolished) which was on left side off Beach Haven Road (formerly called Puriri Road) a few blocks up from Beach Haven Wharf.

1939 Due to the war (WW2) the Resident and Ratepayers Assn. became “dormant” as did most other organisations in the district at the time.

1949 New Years’ Eve the Birkdale Fruitgrowers Society’s Community Hall situated on cnr Puriri Rd, now Beach Haven Road and Lancaster Road was destroyed by fire. The twelve hundred pounds Insurance pay-out was then donated to the newly reformed Beach Haven &Birkdale Ratepayers & Resident Association when the Birkdale Fruitgrowers Assoc. folded.

1958 The money was used to buy the block of land fronting 336 Rangatira Road including where the shops are out the front.

1958 2nd May Beach Haven & Birkdale Residents & Ratepayers Association was incorporated

1960 The land where the front shops are was sold and the proceeds were used towards a new Hall that was built by Bert Evans.

The remainder of the money was to be raised by five pound debentures.

1960 After the Hall was completed one of the first regular hirers to use it was the Beach Haven Birkdale Garden Circle who still meet monthly in this hall 53 years on.

1979 50TH Anniversary of BBRA:  A celebration dinner was held at the Ranch House with around 150 attending.

1983 After 23 Years whilst the Hall was paying its way the Association still owed $1,200 on the mortgage and Percy Allison offered to organize a Beach Haven Derby Fun Night to pay this off. Indeed the evening was such a huge success the Hall has been debt free ever since.

2008 30th April dropped “& Ratepayers” from Association name to read “Beach Haven Birkdale Residents Association Incorporated”

2009 19th August the Association was registered as a Charitable Entity under the Charities Act 2005.  Reg. No.  CC41827

2012 The Hall’s name was shorten to “Beach Haven Hall”

2013 Saturday 31st August   BBRA members and guests held a flag raising ceremony by BBRA Life Members to the sound of Pipes and Drums. A special lunch followed in the Beach Haven Hall to Celebrate 101 years since the Birkdale Fruitgrowers Society was formed and its connection in later years with the Beach Haven Birkdale Resident and Ratepayers Assn. Inc. together with a big thank you to those that contributed their time and energy to the upgrade of the Hall.

2013 In brief BBRA is 84 and the Beach Haven Hall 53 years old.
